First, some history: When I was a child, watching my pops get ready to go out was something to behold. He would spend hours preparing his mask every morning for whatever crowd, person or community he faced. Even years later, my pops still took longer to get ready than my mother and sister combined, delicately taking a black Sharpie to any stray grays that might pop up in his goatee. My pops would explain that as a young man in the Dominican Republic, you had to work so hard perfecting yourself, preparing your mask, so that when a young European or American woman came through, she might choose you, as he would put it, might take you home with her, like that was your only way out. University is difficult because there were so many people — but out of the 35 musicians on my course, I was most definitely the only black person until third year. Amy C. In this article, I argue that intimate stories are an important resource for the achievement of intersectional identities. Drawing on in-depth interviews with black college students at two predominantly white universities, I examine the stories black college women tell about interracial relationships between black men and white women. Interracial stories draw on public beliefs about gender, sexuality and race to create a collective identity, imbue it with meaning, and socialize black women into common dispositions and practices.
The transition to college makes race newly salient to black women; black women must coordinate raced gender identities with other black women across differences in backgrounds and dispositions. By learning and adopting interracial stories, black college women create alliances with other black women, draw boundaries against black men and white women, and craft black womanhood as strong and outspoken. The unnamed guy, from the UK, told his would-be date that he’d meet her upstairs in a pre-arranged establishment, but she insisted she would rather wait outside for him – and her reason was shocking.
She explained: ‘I don’t like going to black ppl’s places by myself,’ followed by a nervous-faced emoji. After the lady’s initial comment, she continued that she would ‘never go to the Rum Kitchen by herself’ as the last time she went there she was ‘nearly the only one white person there.
That one guy who when you talk about music tell you he “loves hip-hop”; that one guys who says “I just don’t get this racism thing.” That one guys.
A kind, smart man who moves me, might be able to rock with me, regardless of race or ethnicity. The vast majority of my Black girlfriends exclusively and purposely date Black men, so I get a lot of questions about my UN-friendly dating roster and most of those questions are about the white dudes. Seeing specific movies is not a dating requirement for me. You better know and love Stevie Wonder, though.

Growing up in a predominantly white area, my options were limited. As I was navigating my teens, love was shoved down my throat on TV; I watched my friends pair off at house parties, and I started to become even more aware of the need to find my perfect match. I carefully curated him in my mind. He was tall, authoritative, kind, and loving, but I never thought about what colour he would be.
When it comes to dating, I’d rather not think about race. But that’s been hard to avoid.
